Department Description
The Laboratory of Neurophysiology and Behavior takes advantage of the relatively simple nervous system of the fruit fly Drosophila to examine how flexibility is engineered into the nervous system to give rise to adaptive behaviors, at the level of both individuals and species. We examine how learning rapidly shapes neural pathways to allow each member of a species to respond appropriately to their unique experience of the world. We also consider how neural circuits are adapted over longer evolutionary time scales to give rise to species-specific behaviors. Our lab employs a multidisciplinary approach, from biochemistry to behavior, with the goal of revealing the neural basis for flexible behavior at high resolution.
Detailed Description
The Research Assistant will work closely with senior researchers studying the evolution of neural circuits underlying species-specific behaviors. Responsibilities include brain dissection, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, transgenic fly generation, chromosome mapping and drosophila husbandry. Possibility of a motivated individual to expand work to include neural calcium imaging, optogenics, behavioral assays, and RNA sequencing. Additional responsibilities will include assisting the lab manager with general lab maintenance and organization.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in science and educational emphasis in neurology, biology or closely related discipline required. Previous drosophila genetics and husbandry experience preferred. Must be detail-oriented, highly organized, proactive and capable of working both independently and within a small team. Must be able to multitask and assist with scientific endeavors and organizational needs simultaneously.
